What does everybody think of the TL-01? I'm thinking of buying either this:
www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi...LXGA35&P=7 (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p.pgm?Q=1&I=LXGA35&P=7)
or a RTR Street Sport once I either get more money or convince my parents to let me spend what I already have.

I can see that I would need some oil-damped shocks, but other than that, how does the car perform?

if its between that or the street sport, get that. those are decent cars.

Yeah, and I love the body. My only problems are that:

a.) It's a Tamiya...can we say "parts trees?"
b.) I really don't want to have to build the thing, and the RTR is way too expensive.
c.) I want performance...how fast does it go, and does it pogo like crazy without oil-damped shocks?

Thanks!

actually tamiyas arent that tough to build. and the friction shocks arent that bad.

Any performance figures, anyone?

The TL01 is a cool car for the price, but if you're really looking for performance, it's a godawful starting point. It's not designed for performance at all -- it's designed to be cheap and effective while accepting standard tires, motors, electronics & bodies. I believe it goes about 19mph out of the box with MSC, which is about the same as an RTR Rustler with stock gearing & Stinger motor. The stock tires are generally fairly hard and come with no foam inserts (may depend upon which kit you get, not sure). The chassis has a fairly high CG. The friction shocks & springs work better than you might expect, but the car does bounce up off the ground over small bumps.

It's a good car for starters, but to someone experienced with R/C's who is looking for performance, I wouldn't recommend it.

Would the Street Sport be any better? I'm serious though. :-o

The Street Sport is much faster (and lighter, I believe) out of the box with the Stinger motor. However, the tires it comes with are disgraceful. It is possible to adapt standard sedan wheels & tires to it, though. It's not 4WD, so handling in the turns will be different, though I won't say it'll be any worse as I haven't seen one drive.

The Street Sport will accept standard bodies as well?

That is my understanding, but I could be wrong...

there was a whole article on how to get your TL-01 to go fast in last months RCCA!

Did it say how much it would cost?

If you want fast, buy a Bolink pan car, put a decent motor, maybe 7 cells(6 will still be fast), and gear it up. That will be faster than the TL-01 can ever be. The TL-01 will traction-roll if you throw it into a corner hard. You can put spacers in the shocks to help lower the car. With bearings, speed-tuned gears, and the carbon shafts(both main drive shaft, and the gear shafts), Oil Shocks, and other stuff, the TL-01 will perform quite well.

The fastest stock-powered car I own is my HPI Super F1. It's got a LRP IPC esc, Green Machine 3 w/ some tweaks.

the tl-01 goes about 17.5 mph right of the box... i bought one myself.... if you stock performance, (which one is the fastest out of the box) get the street sport. If you want one that has the most upgrade ability i would get the tl-01. That little bugger could be one fast little car if you put 100 bucks into it.

yes rcca did have an article about how to get an electric to go fast for cheap and the test car was a tl-01 so you might want to try and find that article.... but if you dont it basically said get a new esc, ball bearings, a good motor with high RPM's, good gearing setup, new tires, and a high performance battery. But if you're low on money and you dont have enough to get all this stuff id just get bearings, new esc, and a decent motor. You'd be set. I kept the friction springs... they work fine when driving if you got the oil-damped springs you wouldnt be able to tell a dif when driven... they dont help that much. (just dont hit bumps.. lol) Personally if i were you i would get a 4-tech(does traxxas use an 'h' at end?)its got great performance and its pretty fast... (like 21mph stock) But it is more exspensive....
Blah sorry this is becoming longer than i thought. sry lol

If I were you I would get a 4-tec. I kill my friends TL-01 in the races and now he wishes he got a 4-tec. I know there aern't many (but a lot more than tamiya) upgrades wise. Get a RTR 4-tec, new ESC, some ball bearings, sway bars, and a new motor and your off to the races. ( not guaranteeing you will win though)

If you want to get your butt kicked by those who have TC3, get TL01
Or if you think about winning the race, get TA04 and rule those guys with TC3

I have a tLO1 B ... basiclly a buggy version with longer a arms Also I have the clear oil shocks for it Fulll duracrapp bearings.. HPI Junk stock 17 turn motor.... spike tirews all around.... and the sucker hauls arpound a baseball field...(about theonly place I will drive it until I can find replacement tires lol) I'd say after It winds out from the cruddy low end torque of teh HPI motor its gongabout 32-35MPH.... biut ofcours ethe bushings in teh motor kill it pretty quick... I just havent had time to tear the car in half to take out a motor.... thats the biggest draw back is how annoying they are to work on.
