One of the guys that I know pretty well from my church just got into r/c planes, and Ive always wanted to learn to fly. Im a big, and I mean BIG, corsair lover. Those planes are just beautiful. So can anyone lead me in the right direction as to what to start out with and such, if my wallet allows it (Im workin alot now, so all of my r/c's are benefitting :D) Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi and Welcome to the Air forums. :)

To get into Flying, the cost can be considerable. I would recommend getting a Simulator first and trying it out before spend the money, you can get a decent one with a controller for around $200.00. Your first plane should be a 40 or 60 size trainer, you can get them ARF (almost ready to fly)or RTF(ready to fly), you would also need a engine, radio system and the field equipment to go with it. This should give you some ideas and probably more questions but that's what we are here for. :D

EDIT: Here are a few links to help you:

This is the Sim. that I use. G2 (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LA4932&P=1) and here is another good one, from what I hear Reflex (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LA4938&P=1).

This would be a good Ready to fly for you RTF (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXEKF4**&P=0 )

Here is a ARF that would be nice if you wanted to get into the internal workings, ARF (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCAS2&P=0 ) , this would require an engine and all electronics’.

This is the radio I use, it for airplanes and Heli’s and the price is pretty decent Hitec Eclipse (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCCL6&P=0 )

Then you can’t forget about the ground equipment needed to get it in the air, Like a starter, fuel pump, glow plug driver, fuel, flight box, power panel, plus the tools needed. This is the basic’s some you will need and the others are niceties.

My first trainer was the Arrow ARF. I installed the OS .46FX with 3-blade prop and a JR Quattro radio with Hitec flight pack. Nice flying plane but I think if I had it to do over, I would go with the Alpha .60 that Horizon carries. I flew a .40 size and it was nice. It would just "float" when I brought it in to land it. The arrow I got drops rather quickly when you chop the throttle on it, I was told the Arrow was a second level trainer but I like it none the less. The sim is a great idea, but, if your buddy flies, go woth him to the field one time and ask him to put you on a buddy cord, if he's got a trainer, so you could "test" it to see if flying might be something you may be interested in doing. Good luck with it and I hope you enjoy it!! Let us know how things go for ya!

My first trainer was the SIG Kadet Sr. Kit. (such a shame they discontinued that... AWESOME plane!) They offer it in ARF form, and really is a dream to fly. IT looks beautiful in the air and on the ground. Also, it's fun to keep once you advance your flying/building skills as the possibilities for modifications is ENDLESS! It's a HUGE plane (7 foot wingspan to be exact) and is only limited by your imagination! Not to mention how sweet it is to fly... very slow and extremely stable.

I'm still ticked off that I had to crash mine. :( So sad.

Ive had a tower trainer .40 for a couple years now, and never flown it. Picked it up for $50 and it has never been flown.

The question I have is, how hard is this thing going to be to fly? Never flown anything before. I know the best way would be to get Realflight, but like I said I only have $50 into the plane. Should I just go out and try it or what? I dont know of anyone around me who flies or any clubs.

BTW theres snow here, should make crashing a little nicer.

my first trainer was a telemaster. man that thing was big and just wow i loved it. then i moved on to a big stick and a ugly stick. try like the hobbico start series. like the avistar or the nexstar. i think ll you have to do as add the rubber bands or maybe glue some of the wing. if you want the best bang for your buck. i loved my bigstick. easy to fly and it is capable of minor aerobatics. i could snap roll it a few times and what not. i do a lot more with my extra hehe.
