Hi Jang.

Great site! I sent you an email a while back regarding your chasis and motor mount, but I guess you didn't get it... or, more likely, very busy!!

Anyway, as I'm sure everyone knows, the steering servo that comes stock on the e-maxx is not the most powerful thing in the world... especially when you are at a slow speed. Without going all out for a replacement servo (I am saving to build an Ultimate E like yours) is there a particular servo you would recommend for a back yard basher? And is there anything else I would need to do?

Also, I have moved my batteries below the tub... wow, what a performance change!! I have a replacement tub on order and will be cutting out the battery trays and bolt them underneath... should be a lot easier than the using ties.

Thanks again for having such a great site.

Rob

Hey there! I probably have gotten your email, but I'm about 2 weeks behind in my non-work-related emails. I should be getting through them over this 4-day weekend, though.

I would recommend the Hitec 615MG ball-bearing servo for ya. You can pick one up for around $35 online, so it's cheap, and it's plenty fast (.18 second 60-degree turn at 6V) and nice & strong too (132 oz/in at 6V)!

Another good steering add-on would be a GS (General Silicones) servo saver like I have on the Spyder. These things are smooooooth as silk and well-made. Worlds apart from the stock servo saver.

Thanks for the info.

As I scour the internet shops for this servo I have come up with some interesting finds... one site lists the servo with the specs you gave (Stormer) and 3 others list it as

Torque: 7.7kg/cm (110 oz/in)
Speed: 0.23 sec/60 deg.
$39

At Stormer, the 645 list specs at

Torque: 133 oz. at 6.0v
Speed: .20 sec at 6.0v
$52

I think these are too close in specs and too far apart in price to be correct. Any thoughts?

The 110 oz/in and 0.23 sec/60 deg. figures for the 615 are at 4.8v, not 6.0v:

(note that the precise figures reported vary slightly like 107oz/in vs. 110 oz/in, but they're generally very close)
