Picked up a Mini-Quake a few days back and it is quickly becoming my favorite Micro. :D Below are some speed tests I ran over the weekend using a Garmin GPS unit to measure speeds. I ran several tests on a clean stretch of smooth asphalt to verify speeds.

Stock Mini-Quake with stock 6 cell nicad battery & stock motor - 17.8MPH
The above setup had decent acceleration and excellent brakes.

Stock Mini-Quake with 6 cell GP1100's & stock motor - 18.9MPH
Bit of a surprise the GP's did not add more speed but the mild speed
increase and acceleration was noticeable. Excellent brakes

Stock Mini-Quake with 2400ma 7.4v Li-poly pack and stock motor - 21.3 MPH
Huge increase in acceleration, run time, & mild increase in speed over GP's. This is due in part to the lighter weight of this pack and massive current capacity of this li-poly pack (can easily handle 24 amps with a 30amp burst)
I liked this combo so much I will have it up on our site soon with a kit to allow you to use the stock battery hold down tray. Excellent brakes

Stock Mini-Quake with 2400ma 7.4v Li-poly pack and Mamba 6800 - 36.8MPH
Massive increase in acceleration & top speed. Actually faster than our Mini-t with this same motor (mainly as we cannot fit the 2400 pack in the Mini-T). I do feel that the stock pinion is a bit large and can be dropped a size or two with no hit in top speed. Weelies easily although not over the top like it does in the Mini-T so you feel very in control. Brakes were excellent and could stop on a dime. The new USB Mamba software allows you to point and click your brake curve allowing for some crazy control although I left it pretty much linear since I was on asphalt but this would come in very handy on loose tracks to dial it in . I had no problem with outdrives and this included nasty tests of going full speed and then locking up all for tires/slamming into reverse on asphalt with high grip. Even at these speeds the Min-Quake could come to a full stop in a just a few feet. Very impressive. Concrete however remains the enemy and after I tagged a curb hard I snapped one of the brass balllinks. Replaced with the aluminum ball from 3racing as it works nicely with the stock plastic links.

In a few days I will have some video up of the brushless combo in action

Awesome Troy!

Although I'm surprised about the GP1100 pack on the stock motor. I expected more (especially since others were saying it was noticably better).

36mph with 6800 & 7.4v li-poly? Cool! I can't wait to see what the 8000kv with 9.6v 8-cell GP1100 will do (or 3-cell li-poly). I'm expecting high40s/low50s with stock gearing and stock ESC settings. I've got a 6-cell GP1100 on the way and will be testing that with my 8000kv in the MQ (stock gearing stock ESC settings).

Good to hear you didn't break the outdrives like others. Must be that others are doing the reverse/forward wheelies or just got a bad part from the get go.

17.8MPH with stock everything isnt bad. Beats the mini-t's 10 MPH with tail wind.

just wondering but do you have the brushless video yet?

Hey guys, I was at the LHS the other day and drove one the Duratrax's, WOW, I loved it. I would have never expected a Duratrax product to have a higher rating on my own scale than a Losi. I am considering buying one, but cash is short. 2 big thumbs up for Duratrax.

Nice!! Just the information I wanted to find!

Looks like I will hopefully be gitting a Mini Quake, Mamba 6800kv motor and esc, Etec 2400-2S, and an Apache S2500 charger :D

Oh and Troy, you've got mail! Cant wait to see the video too!

buy the way what pinion did you use on the mamba?

mini-b - People are using a thin layer of tape around the mamba shaft and then sliding the stock miniquake pinion onto the shaft. Thats about the best solution so far. The pinions are made for a 2.3mm shaft while the mambas have a 2mm shaft. And the pinion is 48-pitch, which the regular mini/micro pinions are slightly different/tighter pitch than that.

Hello everyone, I just used the stock pinion with a bit a tape to beef up the Mambas shaft to 2.3mm (like CooLJoE uses)

We wont have the battery up on our site until I have a good supply of them in stock (about 1 more week)

I'll check out the PM you sent me right now Nitroboy24

The Video is going to be a bit longer. I snapped the driveshafts awhile back. Everything else on the MiniQuake is so solid but the plastic drive shafts are a real weak spot. These HAVE to be replaced with the upgrade units. Waiting for ours to get here and I am going to stock them also and make a package deal with the Mambas. I was really bummed when this happend as this little truck is a blast to drive. Video will come the day after they arrive! Thanks again

Hey Troy, I've got another questionor two:

Do you know when you'll have the Astro Flight 109 Charger back in stock? I figure if I am going to enter the world of lipoly I might as well get a lipo dedicated charger (since I've already got an awesome nimh charger) that will have more features, charger larger batteries with larger capacities, etc.

Oh, and the Phoenix USB Programmer work with the Mamba esc's? I read Shawn's thread about it but the topic is still kind of blurry.

It's going to be a long, sleepless (;)) few weeks waiting for that BL and lipo powered MQ video to come out! Late November, Tower please keep your word!! :D

Thanks again!
-John

EDIT:
Just saw that you shouldn't use car batteries to power the Astro Flight..Seems like the same thing for the Triton too. Man, the price of the power sources they recommend are in the $80 range too..

What do you use to power your lipo chargers Troy? Also, would you recommend any power sources?

After thinking it over for a bit it won't be too big of a problem for me to get a good lipoly charger and power source, just had to change around the tower wish list around a bit.

ok, noob question here... how much for this set up on a mini-quake...

Stock Mini-Quake with 2400ma 7.4v Li-poly pack and Mamba 6800 - 36.8MPH

and is it as simple as changing the battery and motor? what else needs to be changed?

what are hte basic changes to make an overall better rc?

wires?
connectors?
aloys?
chargers?

the top speed is right on the dot but the punch is very snapier.it gets up to speed very quick with the gp's.thats why a lot of people notice the difference.the top speed is right on.

drive train needs to be beefed up to if your going to do any motor swap.also if your going for a higher output battery pack.the stock drive train needs cvd's and ball diffs.it is ok stock but this is defanatly one of the mini quakes weakest links.dont know when but you will eventually be swapping this out in time cause they will break.

whats up big pimpin, hang in there man.i was in the same boat.going lipo is no joke,it will defanatly put a hole in your pocket.but i know its worth it.its got a hell of more punch and longer run times.i have a friend that runs a 11.1v 700mah lipo pack in his miniquake with a mamba 6800 set up and he has noticably longer run times and way punchier accelleration than the 8 cell gp1100's he managed to squeeze in there.i'm waitinf for my my lipo pack to come in the mail.i already recieved my triton charger.the cool thing is you dont really need a high power expensive power supply cause your not going to charge a lipo @ no more than 3amps max anyway(they are super sensative and hate being rushed by high amps, depending on capacity.so anything bigger than 10 amp power supply is useless in charging lipo's.

I just set my MQ up with a 3 Cell LiPo 1500 hooked up to a Mamba 6800. It is scary fast. I out ran an Inferno last weekend running on the street. That guy was POed. I love this set up but I had to modify the truck a little to get it to work do to battery size. It Wheelies on demand in grass and the street even when I'm not trying to. Now if it didn't flip so easy.
