Quote:
ANGRY crowds have singled out and bashed people of Middle Eastern appearance at Sydney's Cronulla beach as racial tension erupted into violence.
And an ambulance called to the scene to treat five people injured in today's violence has been attacked by a mob who shattered its windows.

Meanwhile, police have been pelted with beer bottles, and their patrol cars stomped on, as the outnumbered officers struggled to maintain control.

Pictures In pictures: National shame

Witnesses saw officers using capsicum spray in a bid to quell those perpetrating the violence.

NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Mark Goodwin said police were forcing their way through the crowd, trying to prevent further attacks.

It was those people the ambulance was trying to reach when it was attacked.

"An ambulance attempting to transport five injured people from the scene was set upon by a large group of people who smashed its windows," an ambulance spokesman said.

Mr Goodwin said today's violence was disgusting.

"What has been occurring on some fronts is that people of Middle Eastern backgrounds that have been seen in the Cronulla area – a swarm of the crowd has approached these people with vile abuse, in the most un-Australian way," Mr Goodwin said.

"We have a number of reports of persons that have been assaulted."

He said the bulk of the crowd had behaved but pockets of violence had broken out.

"... we have sections of the crowd that have swollen towards young Arabic males and females, who have been using this beach."

Three people have been arrested so far, with more arrests expected.

Earlier today, police rushed to Cronulla train station where a mob ran there from the foreshore after receiving a text message saying a group of Lebanese people were trying to leave. Mr Goodwin said the text message was wrong, but sparked a scuffle at the station between the crowd and police.

"The behaviour that's been seen down here at Cronulla today is nothing short of disgusting and disgraceful," he told reporters at the beach.

"It's certainly not the Australian way.

He appealed for calm in the beachside suburb in Sydney's south.

"These people are from an area that is a peaceful suburb ... and what they are doing to their area at the moment, fuelled by people from other areas as well, is nothing short of disgraceful."

Earlier, a police spokeswoman said two men, aged 32 and 20, had been charged with offensive behaviour.

A third man had been arrested and was expected to be charged with assault, she said.

It was not clear if any of the arrests related to earlier witness reports of at least three men being pursued and attacked as they tried to get away from angry members of the crowd chasing them on foot.

At least two of the men took refuge at Northies Pub, where police gathered to protect them.

Roads were closed down as the violence flared today, with mounted police trying to maintain control lines as a police chopper hovered over the beach.

Some bars and shops along the beach have temporarily closed. Others have bouncers stationed at the door, blocking anyone from going inside.

Authorities had expected trouble today after two violent incidents at the beach last week – an attack on two lifeguards on Sunday and a brawl later in the week in which youths turned on a media crew. A series of text messages then began circulating, encouraging members of two rival groups of beach users to attack each other.

One of the messages had urged "Aussies" to take revenge against "Lebs and wogs". Another urged locals to rally at a point on the beach today to take retaliation against "middle eastern" gangs.

As the 5,000-strong crowd moved along the beach and foreshore area today, one man on the back of a ute began to shout "No more Lebs" – a chant picked up by the group around him.

Others in the crowd, carrying Australian flags and dressed in Australian shirts, yelled "Aussie, Aussie, Aussie ... Oi, Oi, Oi".

Authorities spent last week calling for calm, and Mr Iemma today said he would amend the law so that thugs who assaulted lifeguards could face the maximum 25 years in jail.

The amendment would allow courts to consider it an aggravating factor if an assault victim was a volunteer.

"Those who selflessly give up their time to save people in distress on the beach should not be considered easy targets by thugs and hooligans," Mr Iemma.

"We are going to back them with extra protection that will ensure that judges take into account their status in the community when sentencing."

What do you think about all this?

I have to say that it is very "Un-Australian" and it puts us in a hole of shame, but I can understand where the Aussies are coming from. They were simply fed up with the Lebanese people causing conflict and trouble around Sydney. I for one can't stand Lebanese people. There are a few of them here in Albury and and they are complete jerks. They laugh at you, make funny gestures, stare at you and are complete arrogant and rude pricks at that.

You're probably thinking i'm racist? Well i'm not. I have a few good Lebanese friends who are indeed good people, but the majority of these so called "Australian" haters are idiots. I was in McDonalds the other day and I overheard a conversation between a few Lebanese people and the McDonald's employees - RUDE!

These riots are only going to get worse. There may be one in Melbourne very shortly and one here in Albury. There have been text messeges floating around telling the Aussies to meet at ------- Park to riot and take back their land at some particular time, here in Albury!

Tell me your views and opinions on this.

I think it makes us Ausralians look very uncivilised, but EvadeROAR is right im not racist hey i have black friends and so on, but some of the lebanese people think they can do things and get away with it. Like our local supermarket caught one guy shoplifting a year ago, the lebanese guy threatened to sue for being racist! But yes australians are getting very fed up with them. I hear one man got stabbed in the back by a lebanese gang when he was getting in his wheelie bin form the street!

my 2 cents

Australia is a Multicultural country. The Lebonese people are priveleged to live in our country, therefore they must show respect to us and everything around them. It doesn't appear to by like this at all, though. If they can't behave then they can leave.

I stand by Pauline Hansen to an extent.

I think livin in perth we are very sheilded by racail voilence, but it is on the rise, i grew up in melbourne and i have to admit, I was picked on by more lebanese and other cultural groups, as I have never been picked on by a mob of aussies, I think people are a product of their enviroments?

The lebanese are just un-grateful to be in Australia. Their parents and grandparents fled their country to take shelter in Australia, then their sons and grand sons run around in packs bashing Aussies, starting fights for NO apparent reason (seen this numerous times in the city and at clubs etc) then chant about how great lebanon is.

They are 2nd and 3rd generation Australians, but talk about the home land etc that they have never even seen or been to.

Its really annoying and frustrating, as you see other races such as Vietnamese and Asians, who every racist picks on just because of their looks or whatever, but their contribution to the country is far greater than the Lebanese. They work damn hard at bakery's or in high profile companies etc and have a fair crack at the opportunity they are given. Its not really fair that everyone picks on them.

To be really honest, and at the risk of sounding like a tool, I was actually proud of what happened at Cronulla. Something had to be done to stop all those ethnic gangs picking on individuals and bashing people etc. It showed them that its our country and that they cannot behave like that.

The scene they showed of cronulla with everyone draped in flags with beer and BBQ's and elderly people out their showing their support was priceless.

EDIT: Just to clarify I am in no way shape or form a racist. I have friends of all ethnicities including Lebanese. I can honestly say that the majority of lebanese attitudes are the same, and that when they get in groups together, it only gets much much worse.

Just an observation.... If america can justify (impossible) Leveling Japan ww2 and killing women/children when men were away at war!!!!!!!!!
Then why oh why didnt they level middle east????? (didnt get oil anyway)
All japan did was a pissy coastal raid LOL
Twin towers and they did nothing...........

First off, not all of Japan, it was two islands.
Secondly, a lot of things IN THE WORLD have changed since then.
Third, we(American troops) didn't target only a group of people. Granted, we over reacted a little because of what happened at Pearl Harbor, but you make it seem like we went behind the Japanese people's backs. You seem to forget that there were women and children that were killed because of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

I know I'm not from Austrailia, and I'm not defending the people who rioted or the victims of beatings or anyone but some of the things you guys are saying are the same exact things White Supremacist and racist say about everyone in this country who isn't 100% white(even though only care about color, (bleep (http://www.ultimaterc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1923))(bleep (http://www.ultimaterc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1923))(bleep (http://www.ultimaterc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1923))(bleep (http://www.ultimaterc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1923))ing idiots). Mainly the "(blank) people are privileged to live in our country, therefore they must show respect to us and everything around them. ... If they can't behave then they can leave." I'm not saying any of you are racist, just pointing out how much what you're saying can easily sound like it.

I hate to say it, but I do know how you guys feel about this, well it seems like I do because those types of things happen in southern California very often. I honestly believe that they(Lebonese idiots who start crap, in this case) do start fights, create gangs, etc. because there aren't others around to keep them in check or the feel like they aren't welcome there so they have to band together and protect what's theirs.

back on topic:
When that many people go after a small goup it's a corruption of the human spirit. I understand the hate, the desire to keep trouble makers away, but when the people you're going after are down/have givin up and are being treated so they can continue to live, it's time to walk away not go after the people trying to help them. The only word I can think of, which doesn't do how I feel about this justice, is disgusting.
Everytime I read things like this, it reminds me that no matter how peaceful things seem, there's always going so much hate and desire to create pain...

I am going to agree with Johnny J and EvaderROAR here. Everything they have said is completely true.

WARNING: If you are highly offended, please leave now, and don't read any further. I am about to speak my piece, whether it happens to be right or not.

First of all, I have a different array of friends. I have Spanish friends, Asian Friends, and African American Friends. (Just so you all know)

I think the situation in Australia is pretty much parallel to the gang problems we have here. I think it's great that they are doing something about it.

I work at a grocery store. Every day I see people from all aspects of life.

There is a housing development funded by the government directly behind the store. There is some kind of disturbance there almost every week; police officers are paid to patrol in those projects every night. Here is the funny thing: Most of the people causing the trouble in that development don't even pay enough taxes to pay for the police officers, and the people that do pay and aren't causing trouble are inconvenienced when another problem arises and half of the police department is trying to keep people in the housing district out of trouble.

Another thing that irks me is to see people with foodstamps buying beer, cigarettes, and junk food. I have seen someone pay for their food with an EBT card and turn around and pull a hundred off the stack to pay for some beer. Alot of people buy junk food aswell; mostly meat (to trade or sell for drugs or money), candy, and name brand junk food. They don't seem to mind the steep increase in price over the store brand, because they're not paying for it.

Another thing is gang related activity. Where I live, there is something always happening in "the hood". Always. I don't live near it, but when the store I work at got robbed of tens of thousands of dollars, it took the police over 30 minutes to arrive. Why? I'm sure you can figure it out.

The bottom line is, things are getting out of hand just like they are in Australia, but I look up to them for having the balls to do anything about it. This country needs to crack down on crime, EVERY state needs to adopt the 3 strikes rule as California has, and the death penalty needs to be used more often to get rid of the scum that doesn't deserve to live with the rest of society, even in jail.

I look on the news every day and see violence occouring that makes me throw up a little bit in my mouth. Children beaten to death, Elderly people attacked for their pocketbooks, and people randomly shot because they were caught in the crossfire of a gang. What has America come to? If people could come back from the 50's and see us now, they would straight up kick our asses for how we live today. Almost no one these days has any pride in making their own hard earned money, and alot of people who have foodstamps think that the government owes it to them.

EDIT: Aceassin72, please don't talk about things you don't understand. The reason we bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki is because the only other choice we had was to lose 1 million+ more Allied lives trying to fight the Japanese off. During that time, dying for Japan was a very high honor, and the Japanese would not have given up until the last person wasn't standing.
