Well, planes don't race. Also, planes are very hard to fly. Trust me. I would look into an electric to start out with. www.towerhobbies.com has a bunch, you just pick the one you like pretty much. If you have never flown a plane...they require alot more hand/eye coordination than say an RC car would. It's 3D instead of 2D. But it would be great to have another fellow pilot in here. There aren't many of us. Just remember, when you break parts (you WILL), don't get frustrated. Remember, it's supposed to be fun so just go have fun. Don't run into anything. Just look around at my other plane posts to hear some aircrash stories. And always have spare wings on hand;)

go for a firebird XL or an aerobird:) the whole line of firebird planes are great:D. I own a firebird and a firebird XL. they are both exelent airplanes. but if you want more manuverability go for the aerobird, its a 3 channel and you can do some aerobatics with it:) hope that helped ya........

Your best bet would be to try a simulator first to get the feel of flying. Then do some research for trainer type aircraft. I have heard nothing but good about the Firebird family of planes.
Good luck.

The MISS 2 by Hobby Lobby is a great starter plane. It will go about 30mph, and do minor aerobatics. I got one, and have flown it for a total of 10 minutes as my first plane, other than a 1ch thing when i was 7. you can find it at... http://www.hobby-lobby.com/miss2.htm

After that 10 minutes with no instruction, i can loop, take off, land, and fly in wind (harder than it sounds). Great plane overall.

Planes aren't hard to fly at all. But even if they seem to be, you learn really quickly.

trxrustler11121-you dont know JACK about planes. Extra wings??? for a firebird 2 maybe. Dont hit stuff??? its not that easy. PLANES ARE HARD TO FLY!!! I am a seasoned flyer, and i know that it is hard to start off flying. The controlls are 3d... WOW he got one right?!?! You dont break parts... you break pieces of balsa wood, which then you will have to take CA glue or epoxy to to fix. Then you will fly again, break again, and repeat thye same procedure. TRUST me on this. I am on a crashing streak right now... previous 3 years: NO crashes...last 3 weeks: crashed every flight. YES, i did fly everybit as often during those three years as i did the last 3 weeks. aircrash? not a word, and you crash on land or hit a tree/pole...not in the air. Oh yeah... YOU CAN RACE PLANES!!! there are pylon races, cou can set them up on your own or go to an organized event.

MUCH better now...

KMS, an excellent package to start out with would be the Merlin from Megatech. We've flown them in the parking lot at work (no more than a 100' x 50' area) and they do fine. Their top speed is about 8 mph but when you hit the ground, they rarely break unless you literally nose-first it in. I've seen several hit and just bounce. They normally run in the $200 price range for the plane (plane, radio, a few extra parts, 1 battery, and charger). For around $160-$170, you can get the Skywave from Hot Bodies, but I would only reccomend this plane if you have a larger area to fly it.

Most importantly, prepare yourself to just laugh when you crash and break something. Its the only way to really stay in this hobby. I smeared a Tiger 2 this spring (doing low inverted passes, got caught in an airpocked and when I pushed out of it, the tail hit the ground, ripping the vertical and horizontal stab off pretty much making the plane a lawn dart for the last 100 or so feet of its doomed flight) but that had to have been one of the funniest crashes I've seen eventhough the only things that survived were the battery pack, receiver, and 2 servos.

you want something like a slow flyer kit, an electric, and the firebirds are AM.no flight fields anywhere that are AMA will let am fly becuase they get too much interference

stampede dude, you need to calm down and quit being so rude. the idiot post was un-called for. warning sent. also, your sig is too tall, please check the guidelines and fix it.

Flying is hard, it is fun, you will break stuff, and yes you can race them. I used to do pylon racing. stampede dude is right about the AM radios. If you plan to fly at or near AMA fields, get an FM radio.

stampede_dude, you need to step it down a notch really quick before you get thrown outta here! My expieriences with the firebird line of planes has been great. There is absolutely NO prblem with them whatsoever. Yes they do run on AM but I never had any interferance or problems with the two airplanes that I own. If you are starting out they are great! I then went on to slowfliers after I was done learning with my firebirds. I would also recommend GWS slowfliers for a begining airplane. They are great fun!:D
