OK, so I want to make a custom RC. I know that I don't have all the resources all the big companies have, but I am going to try.
First thing: I want a gasoline engine. Not no nitro, or electric. Nitro costs too much, and an electric won't be powerfull enough. I was thinking of getting a small gasoline engine. Do you think one from a lawnmower would work?
Second: Since i am going to be custom making it this vehicale, I am going to need to know the best Idea for a frame.
Third: Since I want to use a gasoline eninge, I want it to be bigger, and better than the Baja 5b! I know that this thing is going to be big.
So. I would keep talking, but I want to see if this is a good idea or not? I would have to custom make almost all the parts, because this would be a bigger scale, than whats out there.
Thanks, any input would be nice!

Lawn mower? Bit too big, biggest I've ever seen in an rc was a 1/3 monster truck with riding mower tires and 60cc chainsaw engine, that thing was just stupid though, too big to run anywhere.

Here's another question, if you want it to be so big, how will you build it, and build it strong? This could wind up expensive, and quick too if you don't have a gameplan when you start out.

Well I don't think I would want it to be 1/3 scale. too big. Well I want something like the 5b, just not the 5b or anything else on the market. I want an gasoline engine, so what engine could I get thats not expensive. Then I will be able to do everything from there.

a buddy of mine, made a buggy frame from 5/16 inch steel rod and put a 31cc weed whacker engine in it, i thich it was 1/5th or 1/4 scale, it was at least 2.5 ft long!!!, it was fast too, at least 45mph

i've seen and heard most standard gas engines'll work.
weed-eater, chainsaw, ect.
a lawn mower engine would be HUGE. makes me think of the guys who made a brushless barbie doll thingy that the little kids ride in. put a lawn mower engine in that!!!

Castle Creations put two of their Mamba Max 4600 systems in a Power Wheels Escalade, but it was in a Barbie Jeep first. Thing is, for a Power Wheels, they're just powered by two 550 motors really geared down anyway, a lawn mower would be stupid fast........and too hard to mount.

Yah lawnmower engine would be hard to rig up as they are a vertical crank. Why dont you just buy a small gocart and rig that up with servos and reciever?

OK, so i won't go with a lawnmower engine. Too big as all of you stated.
I guess I can try a weed wacker engine. Just get a big tank, some servos, a reciver, and then custom build everything else. Shouldn't be too hard, except the whole engine part!
A frame wouldn't be hard to make. or at least that is what i think.

Any other ideas?

make it big enough to hold a person!!!!
that'd be freaking sweet, lol

now i want to RCify my go-kart...

thing is if you do make one, may be a minor thing but.. how are you going to get a shell to fit ?

also i second the rc-gocart that would rock !

wiggles, that is a good question. I probably just wouldn't have a shell/body. Just a roll cage.
But if I make a rc-gocart, or something else rc that people can sit in, it would just be pointless. because if I wanted to i could just hook up controls on the car!

Ok, so I think I found a good motor! It is a motor for a pressure washer, so its got to be good. It is a $300 value (thats the only thing I don't like!!) and it is 148cc!

Does that sound good? Other wise I found a weed wacker that has a 28hp, 4 stroke engine. Is that one better? It is only $100.

Well the pressure washer is iffy in my opinion's. How is it running, chain etc.. Also how do you plan to make the frame, i think you are going to need to weld the frame, or how do you plan to build the frame?

mgtwanter

Well I can weld the frame. I know a guy that has a welder, so that won't be a problem.

Good question. How am I going to run it? I could either put in a long drive shaft, or I could go with a belt system, or I could put in a chain, like a bicycle chain. Right?

i would assume you could do that as well.
heck, as big a scale as it's gonna be, do you plan on running a transmission?
it might be kinda hard to find one that size, you could always have the engine hooked up to a clutch, then the chain go onto a sprocket attached to the rear axle, and just have the rear axle solid.
just an idea

My old neighbor put an 11hp pressure washer motor on a go cart frame and the thing flies!! It is a blast to ride and will smoke the heck out of the one poor tire. But with a pressure washer motor I think you're still on the scale of the 1/3 scale Bigfoot. I'd stick with the 2 stroke weed wacker size.

Keep in mind the weight too. I would imagine that a pressure washer engine is 30-50lbs or even more.

lol, yeah...
i just might have to try that...
and anything bigger than a weedwacker just might now be worth it

Hey Mgtwanter. I just finished my 4th custom build. A 1/4 scale budget buggy for $250.All aluminun NO welding with a 1.2 hp motor. I know all the ins and outs to building these machines.

If you're going to make a go-cart just make one you sit it. It will be a lot more fun.

Man, if I had the money, I would either put a large engine in mine, or two small ones. It'd all be remote control though, so you could drive your two friends around, or just carry the remote.
That'd be fun...until you go out of range...
