Click here to view the full version : Shock oil or Differential Oil? Any real difference?

Was looking at thick Associated shock oil and noticed that the 80wt (1000cSt) shock fluid is cheaper than the 1000cSt differential fluid.

Is there any difference between the 2 fluids?
Or is it the same stuff but just cost more because its priced with the rest of the differential fluids?
I'm thinking number 2 but I'm no expert.

Shock fluid at $3.69 (MSRP $3.99) for 59mL of 1000cSt

Differential fluid at $4.19 (MSRP $4.50) for 59mL of 1000cSt

Well I suppose if they are the same weight then yes they will be the same as they are both silicone oil
The shock oil linked is 80w
But the diff oil you linked doesn't specify weight and I really doubt they would make a true 80w diff oil as that would be way too light
For most applications diff oil will be 3k-500k weight oil

Is this really about 50?

They both have a listed viscosity of 1000cSt, weight is not a standardized measure of viscosity and varies by manufacture while centistokes (cSt) is standardized and the same for all manufactures.

This picture shows the label better.

Being silicone could one be more or less of a newtonian fluid than the other?
Dilatant differential fluid could be nice but I haven't found anyone that claims to make it for RC cars.

Yes I know that but were talking about the same brand here
AE diff oil vs AE shock oil
I just don't see why the diff oil wouldn't be labeled 80w like the shock oil while both are 1000cSt
