I think the real big feature here is the open-source software. You can actually code the software of the radio, and fairly easily with the programming header so accessible.
There is a bit of a controversy with this radio and how HK/Turnigy is handling the marketing of the software running this radio.

Apparently the software is not developed by HK/Turnigy, but by a community of programmers and HK is taking the cred.

The HK site clearly states it's open source?

To hear all that whining from those people, what a joke. These programmers that I imagine fondly uses $9 turdigy orange dsm receivers and other IP-infringed Hobbyking/Chinese bottom-dollar goods... Oh, but now it's their stuff being abused so we need to hear about it

I'm just so sure the engineers at Spektrum/Horizon will send those programmers that weren't credited their deepest condolences....

The cheapskates who didn't care about clones and wanted to stick-it-to-the-man by supporting cheap goods are now complaining about their stuff being violated?

Doesn't matter now anyway, HK released an updated version of the manual which credits the er9x developers.
