It may seem like I'm stepping backwards from my previous build, but in fact...

Well, yeah, that's exactly what I'm doing

Heheh yeah they almost always get sold off, either through eBay or directly to one of my previous buyers. The only Tamiyas I've kept so far are the two TT-01s I made into projects, and both of those are going to get reused again in the future!

At this moment I have 11 complete or near-complete RCs, not including ones being sold, and not including toy-class ones in the queue for review or other use. I can't afford to hold onto vehicles just to hold onto them. There has to be a specific purpose.

Well this started out differently from the norm. I was all ready to do the "Differential, build 2" thing, but the instructions on this kit start from the chassis tub and build up. First the suspension mounts and arms were installed at all 4 corners. Then the camber link mounts and shock towers were bolted onto the diff housings, here again bringing a surprise by using spacers from the 'V' parts trees -- shock items!

Then finally came, "Differential, build 2"

Tips:
  • Beware that when you drive the droop screws through your suspension arms, even by hand, they'll come out the other end a bit warm from the friction. Just a little warning.
  • When assembling the diffs, it's helpful to set the tiny locknut into its nook before inserting the adjuster screw. Otherwise it can very easily go in upside-down, or try to go on crooked.

Mo stuff did.
  1. Steering. Could do better than oilite bushings, but at least the drag link doesn't have much play.
  2. Attached the ends with the sweet blue-gray anodized driveshaft communicating between them.
  3. Front end. No surprises here, everything went together smoothly, even the evil e-clips on the outer pins.
  4. Rear end. One of these days I'm going to find out why they spec'd for the right front and left rear dogbones to be completely shoved tightly in place with the foam discs in the diff outdrives, but for the left front and right rear to have about 4mm of play. I quadruple-checked the instructions and am pretty sure I got it right. Look at that range of shock angles though! Wow.
  5. Boooooo, old school restrictive motor mount. They give you three spurs and a chart of what spur & mounting location can be used to create ratios that fit.
  6. Again with the really slick-looking blue-gray anodizing, this time on the heat sink. Beautiful heat sink on a silver can motor. Ironic, to a degree. (See what I did there?)
  7. Here the front & rear upper chassis pieces are secured down. The front just adds rigidity, while the rear one seals up the spur & pinions into a relatively dust-free compartment.

Ok, chassis is done. Tomorrow I hope to be able to make time for the body.

By the pics:
  1. Triple concentric ring servo saver. I like the construction of this better than the typical plastic ones, but I worry that very minor corrision from moisture in the air may cause sticking in there.
  2. Here's the steering hooked up with electronics installed. Turns out the steering setup as a whole still has the typical sport-level kit play in it
  3. All 4 wheels are identical, but up front 1mm spacers are used to add a tiny bit of offset.
  4. Shock-building assembly line in full production mode.
  5. A pair of shocks installed
  6. Chassis complete!
