I have always wanted to get into this hobby and I am now looking into it as I get closer to retirement. So many options, but I really like the Traxxas Slash. In particular, the new slash LCG platinum.

Some info:
1) I intend to take it to a local track for racing.
2) I do intend to just have fun bashing around in my yard and at some fields/parking lots near my house
3) I enjoy tinkering...

My questions:
1) is the LCG platinum the right choice?
2) if yes what batteries and radio should I buy and where?

My budget is around 500-600 dollars

Many thanks

Of that is your budget you won't be able to fully set yourself up for that. You will need batteries small too set (for repairs) diff and shock oils, and other little odds and ends. I suggest a 4x4 VXL. Check out this link and my ideas as well as others opinions. If you like to tinker then upgrade a stock 4x4 .gr way YOU want it. You eventually will want a new charger as well which the included one will just be a paperweight.

These are just MY opinion. Many people will say different. I figure this way YOU can be sure you want to get deep into such a moneypit of a hobby. It is ridiculously fun but can be pricey when you get knee deep into it.

Appreciate the comments. The VXL does not have a LCG correct? It looks like I can buy an ultimate LCG on storm hobbies for $570. This is in my price range and I would have another $100-200 to handle damage (if req).

Are they reputable?

Yes, Stormer is reputable. Another option is to join Tower Hobbies Super Saver Club ($9.99/year). You'll receive a set of coupon codes each month. Currently if you spend $300+ you'll get $50 off. The Slash 4x4 Ultimate gives you everything you need to race or bash right out of the box. They are now shipping with a pretty decent lipo and even a lipo charger. Here's the link for the truck, it's $649 before $50 coupon. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...=LZ1010**&P=ML So, $599 gets you a fully RTR Slash 4x4 LCG, lots of aluminum upgrades, 2.4ghz radio, a 2s lipo, and a charger.

Now, I'm no Traxxas fanboy, but when you factor in what it would cost to upgrade a regular Slash 4x4 to a LCG chassis and add all the aluminum, you'd be way over the $600 mark.

Whether or not a Slash 4x4 is the right truck for your needs is really a matter of personal opinion. You'll find quite a mix of imprssions here regarding the Slash 4x4, or any other truck for that matter! IMO, I like the Losi Ten-SCTE and new Traxxas Slash 4x4 Ultimate LCG better than offerings from other manufacturers if I was considering another 4x4 short course truck. At any rate, I hope you do decide to step into the world of the RC hobby, as it has been very rewarding and enjoyable to myself and many others. Welcome Krawolle!

I didn't realize the link for Stormer Hobbies was for the Ultimate LCG, not the Platinum LCG. So, it looks like they are about $30 cheaper than Tower even with coupons. Looks like shipping will be $20, so I guess it's only a $10 savings. Tower also has a $10 gift cerificate with that truck so......................I guess it's a wash. Sheesh. I started typing this post whilst clicking back and forth between the 2 sites. Funny how it all boils down to being within pennies sometimes.
