Conclusions

Testing the new trucks has been a real pleasure. They retain the spirit of the originals that I grew to like years ago, while adding some mature and modern flair along with a well-placed kick-in-the-pants from the new powerplant. When I first saw the new photos on Traxxas.com I was disappointed by how seemingly little had been changed from the previous models, but after trying them first-hand I am now confident that enough has been done to keep sales strong and satisfy many a first-time and repeat buyer alike. The Rustler is more of a proper off-road racing-style truck than ever, and the top speed you can get with what's included in the box is top-rate for its class. The Stampede, on the other hand, remains in a class of its own. If you're in the market for something like a 'Pede, you're in the market for a 'Pede.

If I could change just a few things on the new trucks, I would first immediately swap in shorter rear springs, as well as shorter fronts for the Stampede. It really makes no sense to bother including preload spacers when there's no room for preloading. Next, the Rustler's rear tires need a flatter cross-section so that they can really take advantage of the vastly improved tread pattern and rubber compound. Last, but not least, every Rustler/Stampede/Bandit die-hard is still waiting with seemingly infinite patience for a revival of the SRT-style metal motor mount. The new vented rear face and extra-large washerhead screws are nice, but no substitute for good ole' aluminum.

All in all, I will continue to recommend the Rustler to younger first-timers and folks who want a solid truck that they can do a lot of customizations to, while the Stampede remains one of the all-time best all-around electric bashing vehicles.
